Katakana Literary Work (Final)

These are my 3 haikus. I decided to keep my haikus on Doraemon and Christmas, but I wrote my last one on winter time and cider, since it's already December.  Please enjoy!

Composition 3 二十年のわたし

ざっしのライターになりますから、たぶんニューヨークにいます。ちいさいアパートにすんでいます。そして、私のかぞくのなかで、しゅじんがひとりいます。私のりょうしんはフロリダーにすんでいます。おおきいうちにすんでいます。私のあねとごしゅじんはボストンにすんでいます。それから、毎日私はちかてつで、ざっしのかいしゃへいきます。うちから会社までちかてつでさんじゅっぷんかかります。あとで、ちかてつでうちへかえります。うちでばんごはんをつくります。しゅうまつに、かいものをします。そして、しごとをすこしします。ひまのとき、やすみます。

Katakana final analysis

In my katakana analysis, I will analyze Doraemon and coffee.

ドラエモン is a very popular manga in Japan, and it was written by Fujiko Fujio. It was first published in 1969, and about 1344 different stories were published. The manga is about a robotic cat named Doraemon who is from the future and who befriends a boy named Nobita kun. It chronicles their adventures together. The name "Doraemon" is interesting to analyze because "dora" is written in katakana, whereas "emon" is written in hiragana. "Emon" was a popular male last name, and can be written in both kanji and hiragana. Some people think that the "dora" comes from dorayaki (in dorayaki, "dora" is also written in katakana, and "yaki" is written in hiragana) because ドラやき is Doraemon's favorite food, but others think that the "dora" comes from どらねこ, which means "stray cat" in Japanese. Both theories are plausible.

コーヒー is derived from the Dutch word "koffie." If it had been derived from the English word "coffee, " it would have been spelled "コーフィー" instead of "コーヒー." In the 18th century, Udagawa Yoan created the Ateji for "coffee": 珈琲. (Ateji are foreign words that are made into kanji based on how they sound). Other foreign words have been made into Ateji, such as "engineer" and "club."

My Thanksgiving Break

わたしのセンクスギビンはそぐこたのしかった。水曜日に、にほんごのクラスのあと、でんしゃで、ニュージャジーヘいきました。しんせきにあいました。それから、ばんごはんをたべました。木曜日に、いろいろなたべものをつくりました。アップルパイやマッシュポテトをつくりました。そして、テレビでメーシーズのパレードをみました。おもしろかった。そして、五時にばんごはんをたべました。とてもおいしかった。アメリカのたべものとインドのたべものをたべました。金曜びはブラックフライデイだから、木曜日のよる、十時にねました。そして、四時におきました。じどうしゃでニューヨークのモールーにいきました。いちじかんぐらいかかりました。ひとがおおかった。かいものはすごくたのしかった。かばんをふたつとドレスをひとつかいました。土曜日と日曜日にうちでやすみました。えいがをみました。

Katakana Literary Work

For my Katakana Project, I decided to write haikus, which are poems with three lines. The first and third lines have 5 syllables and the second line has 7 syllables. The first haiku I wrote is about Doraemon, a manga that I watched as a child, the second haiku is about coffee, which I drink every morning, and the third haiku is about Christmas, my favorite holiday. I hope you enjoy them!

やまださんへ、
はじめまして。わたしはステファニーバラクリシュナンです。いまじゅうはっさいです。コロンビアだいがくのいちねんせいです。コロンビアはいいだいがくですが、がくひはとてもたかいです。私はコロンビアだいがくのせいかつになれました。クラスはおもしろいです。そして、たくさんあらいます。しょくどうはべんりで、たべものはおいしいです。としょうかんはしずかで、とてもきれいです。のほんおせいかつはどうですか。わたしはくがつなのかににほんへいきます。よろしくおねがいします。

Katakana Analysis Draft

ドラえもん：Doraemon is a popular manga in Japan. It is interesting to analyze because the "Dora" part of "Doraemon" is written in katakana, whereas the "emon" is written in hiragana. The manga is about a robotic cat named Doraemon who is from the future and who befriends a boy named Nobita kun. It chronicles their adventures together. Doraemon's favorite food is Dorayaki; it's interesting to note that the ドラ in ドラえもん is similar to Dorayaki. However, Dorayaki can be written in hiragana, kanji, and katakana. "Dora" means "gong" in Japanese, so the "Dora" in Doraemon could be written in katakana because it's an onomatopoeia. Also, "emon" was a popular ending for male names in Japan, so that could be why it's written in hiragana. 


コーヒー：This word is a loanword from the English word "coffee." It was also made into a kanji later on. Some foreign words, like this one, are made into kanji called "Ateji." Coffee could be written in ateji because it became a popular word. 

せんしゅうのどようび

わたしのどようびはたのしかった。きんようびに、わたしのおねえさんは、ニューヨークにきました。くるまできました。そして、わたしのおねえさんとばんごはんをたべました。バーガーとフレンチフライをたべました。おいしかった。そして、どようびに、チャイナタウンとソーホーにあるいていきました。たくさんのスカーフをかいました。そして、ダンキンドーナツのコーヒーをのみました。あとで、いっぷどうでばんごはんをたべました。ラーメンはおしいかった！

きょうはすいようびです。

こんいちは。きのう、わたしはにじにねました。はちじはんからにじまでべんきょうしました。きょう、わたしははちじにおきました。つかれました。おととい、かぜをひきました。そして、のどがいたかった。だから、きのう、ライトエイドにいきました。のどあめをかいました。

Why Japanese?

I wanted to take Japanese because I love Japan! My mom is Japanese, and ever since I was little, my family would go to Japan during the summers to visit my grandma's house in Iwate. I love everything about Japan, especially its culture and food. I hope to learn more Japanese vocabulary and Kanji in this class.

I'm really excited about all that Columbia has to offer. I think the most difficult thing after attending the first two weeks of classes was balancing schoolwork with club activities and spending time with friends, but I think that I'll get used to it after awhile. Other than that, I'm really enjoying college life!
