I wanted to take Japanese because I love Japan! My mom is Japanese, and ever since I was little, my family would go to Japan during the summers to visit my grandma's house in Iwate. I love everything about Japan, especially its culture and food. I hope to learn more Japanese vocabulary and Kanji in this class.
I'm really excited about all that Columbia has to offer. I think the most difficult thing after attending the first two weeks of classes was balancing schoolwork with club activities and spending time with friends, but I think that I'll get used to it after awhile. Other than that, I'm really enjoying college life!
I am jealous of you for going to Japan. I really hope to study abroad at some point.

that sounds like a pretty good reason. where in Japan does your family live? and do you always go to the same place or do you visit some of the big cities/tourist locations as well?
